Religious scholar Maulana Tahir Mehmood Ashrafi has been appointed as Special Representative of Prime Minister on Religious Harmony according to a notification issued by the PM’s office.
The notification further states that the appointment of Maulana Tahir Ashrafi shall remain in an honorary capacity and further necessary action may be taken accordingly.

Maulana Tahir Ashrafi is currently serving as the chairman of Pakistan Ulema Council and has close ties with Saudi Arabia.
Furthermore, under the leadership of Ashrafi, the Pakistan Ulema Council (PUC) issued a fatwa against the Islamic State and other extremist groups stating that they were re-interpreting the religion to suit their needs and justify the killings.
