Islamabad Mayor Sheikh Anser Aziz has resigned from his office four months before the completion of his tenure citing interference by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf in local bodies.
Taking to Twitter, Islamabad Mayor Sheikh Anser Aziz shared a copy of his resignation letter stating, “The way we have been pushed to the wall with all powers taken back by federal government, MCI (Metropolitan Corporation of Islamabad) can no longer serve its dearest citizens. Better to quit if I can’t help my people,”
He also stated that the Metropolitan Corporation of Islamabad (MCI) was allocated funds which were never released as there was no finance department but despite everything, he stated that, “We did our best to keep things moving. But now all departments under MCI have been withdrawn, handed over to CDA,”
Islamabad Mayor Sheikh Anser Aziz also thanked his citizens for all the support throughout this time saying that it was a team effort at making the capital “beautiful. clean, green and safest”.
It is pertinent to mention that the Islamabad Mayor belongs to the Pakistan Muslim League – (PML-N) and was removed from office earlier this year when a reference was filed against him over corruption and abuse of power.
However, Sheikh Anser Aziz challenged said reference and was restored by the Islamabad High Court on basis of the allegation being made against him on political groungs.
