The Peshawari startup Teleport has copied the Dutch company Brekr, bringing their Electric Bike to Pakistan while calling it an innovation and claiming that the two-wheeler is “indigenously manufactured” in the country.
Automotive Pakistan busted Teleport after the unveil of their T1 electric bike and exposed the company for copying the Dutch brand Brekr, which introduced the same exact (Ditto) electric bike in early 2020.
UPDATE: Teleport explains copying Brekr design for T1 electric bike.
“On left is Brekr bike and on right is newly developed Pakistan made Teleport electric bike under NIC Peshawar” said Automotive Pakistan in their Facebook post.
Below is a side-by-side comparison of the two electric bikes:
As you can see from the pictures, they have a point as the two-wheeler is completely copied with no changes to the design except Teleport has used spoke wheels instead of alloy rims.
According to Automotive Pakistan, the company secured a Rs. 50 million investment and grant of Rs. 800,000 and the founder of the company is an MBBS doctor and it took Teleport team 4 years to copy Brekr electric bike with most of material is imported from China.
If Teleport was only going to assemble their T1 electric bike in Pakistan, why did the company have to make such big claims and hype about innovation and claiming for their product to be “indigenously manufactured” in Pakistan.
It is not necessarily a bad thing to copy something, however, taking all the credit for it and not admitting of taking inspiration from someone else is wrong, which is exactly what Teleport did when copying Brekr.
Peshawar’s National Incubation Centre (NIC) should at least do a little research before supporting startups over false claims of innovation.
