Several arrested for vandalizing Hindu temple in Karak

Police has arrested over 31 suspects for vandalizing a Hindu temple in Karak District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa while a case has been registered against 350 people for their alleged involvement in the destruction of the shrine.

According to the details provided by the District Police Officer Irfanullah, the JUI-F district leader Maulana Mirza Aqeem was also nominated in the case.

A day earlier, hundreds of residents attacked the Krishna Dwara temple and set the building on fire. According to witnesses, the mob was led by a local cleric namely, Maulana Mirza Aqeem and his supporters.

The issue reportedly broke out after it was revealed that the shrine’s keeper had secretly bought an under-construction house next to the property.

Muslim residents of the area believed that it was done to expand the Hindu temple in Karak as recently permission was given for its renovation.

Videos of the incident were also posted on social media, showing large crowds gathered at the site of the incident, chanting slogans and tearing down the walls of the property.

CJP takes notice of attack on Hindu temple in Karak

Chief Justice of Pakistan, Gulzar Ahmed took suo-motu notice of the incident and fixed the matter for hearing by 5th January 2021 after discussing the issue with the Hindu Council chief patron Dr Ramesh Kumar.

KP government to rebuild the temple

The Special Assistant to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister on Information, Kamran Bangash, said that Prime Minister Imran Khan and the provincial chief executive had condemned the attack on the Hindu temple in Karak.

He further stated that the temple would be rebuilt by the government while the culprits will be brought to justice and rights of minorities protected.
