WhatsApp will not limit features for users if they don’t accept the company’s new privacy policy.
According to The Verge, a spokesman for WhatsApp has confirmed that the company has overturned its decision to limit functionality of the encrypted messaging application for users who don’t accept its updated privacy policy.
The decision was taken after discussions with various authorities and privacy experts. “We want to make clear that we will not limit the functionality of how WhatsApp works for those who have not yet accepted the update.” read the statement by the company spokesperson.
However, WhatsApp will keep reminding users to accept the new privacy policy but these reminders will not become persistent as stated earlier by the company.
The new WhatsApp privacy policy has been under a lot of criticism as it will share more date with parent company Facebook, including messages sent to business accounts that may be stored on the company’s servers.
WhatsApp did clarify that the new privacy policy will affect the average user as messaging and calls to friends and family will remain encrypted. The only people affected by the new terms will be those communicating with business accounts.
However, the users still remained skeptical of the new privacy policy and many even switched to other messaging platforms such as Signal and Telegram.
This forced WhatsApp to delay implementation of its new policies and regain the trust of people. It did not help that the company is owned by Facebook, which has also been involved in many scandals related to data breaches.
