Twitter has announced new rules on Tuesday and banned users from sharing private photos and videos of other people without their consent. The micro-blogging site updated its policy just a day after the Parag Agrawal replaced Jack Dorsey as the new Twitter CEO.
According to the new rules, the people who are not public figures can ask Twitter to remove their pictures or videos that were posted on the social media platform without their permission. “Beginning today, we will not allow the sharing of private media, such as images or videos of private individuals without their consent.” said Twitter, adding that publishing private information about someone is also prohibited under the new policy.

However, the company has said that this policy does not apply to “public figures or individuals when media and accompanying tweet text are shared in the public interest or add value to public discourse.” The company says that it will assess the context in which the content is shared and, in such cases, Twitter may allow the photos or videos to remain on the social media service.
Twitter says that the decision to ban sharing of photos and images of other people without consent has been taken over growing concerns about the use of content to harass, intimidate, and reveal the identities of individuals. The company noted a “disproportionate effect on women, activists, dissidents, and members of minority communities.”
