AMD teases Ryzen 7000 series CPUs with Zen 4

AMD has announced its next generation Ryzen 7000 series CPUs based on the new Zen 4 (Raphael) Architecture at the CES 2022. The company says that these new chips will come to Desktop PCs in the second half of 2022. It seems that AMD is skipping the Ryzen 6000 series entirely for Desktop CPUs and reserving it for the release of mobile chips with the ZEN 3+ Architecture.

The AMD Ryzen 7000 series will be compatible with the company’s new AM5 Socket, which is based on the Land Grid Array (LGA) standard with 1718 pins. It means that AMD chips will not have pins any longer, which will now be moved to the motherboard socket like Intel.

However, the AM5 socket will still support the current AM4 coolers, which mean that users won’t have to go out of their way to get a brand new cooler if they end up deciding to upgrade to the newer AMD Ryzen 7000 series CPUs with the chip-only package.

The new chips are based on the 5nm process node, which is a step up from the current Ryzen 5000 series CPU based on the 7nm process node. Furthermore, the AMD Ryzen 7000 series CPUs will be paired with the latest connectivity technologies, including DDR5 and PCI-e 5.0.

Even though AMD is switching to the LGA standard, their Ryzen 7000 series look no way similar to the Intel chips with the way they have designed the heat spreader. Maybe it has something to do with the thermal performance or maybe there’s more behind the odd design and cutouts in place.

AMD has also announced the launch of a new chip for the current AM4 Socket, the Ryzen 5800X3D with enhanced gaming performance. The 5800X3D uses is the first processor to use the stacked memory technology within its package. The new chip features AMD’s new 3D V-Cache technology that packs 96MB of L3 Cache onto to a single processor through 3D-stacked SRAM.

This will help boost gaming performance by an average of 15% across several titles at 1080p. AMD has claimed that the Ryzen 5800X3D will be the fastest gaming chip in the world, beating Intel’s 12900K despite the chip using DDR4 with the current AMD AM4 Socket. The new chip will be available by Spring of 2022.
