WhatsApp chat backups on Google Drive may get a limited storage in the future as reports have surfaced online suggesting that a limit for WhatsApp chat backups for Android devices is in the works. It bears mentioning that WhatsApp users on iPhone already have limited storage for chat backups on iCloud, however, this is not the case with Android users, who are provided unlimited storage for their WhatsApp chats.
However, WABetaInfo, a service that tracks upcoming features and changes for WhatsApp, has reported that some strings have appeared in the code of the instant messenger that suggest an update may be in the works to limit the storage for WhatsApp chat backs for Android users.
WABetaInfo has shared a screenshot of the strings that indicate notifications for information users when Google Drive is almost full and is reaching the given quota. These alerts could be given when users back up their chats on WhatsApp to Google Drive. Furthermore, users may be provided with options to exclude certain file types from being backed up to avoid filling up the limited storage space in the future.
The reported code suggests that Google would probably offer some fixed storage for WhatsApp chat backups on Google Drive, similar to Apple’s iCloud. However, there is no official information by the company and no confirmed reports of the amount of storage that may be available for chat backups.
It is pertinent to mention that iPhone users do not have unlimited space for WhatsApp chat backups as Apple considers WhatsApp backups as a part of their iCloud storage allocation. Moreover, it would not be surprising to see Google end the unlimited storage allocation for WhatsApp chat backups as the company has already ended the unlimited storage benefit provided to users for Google Photos.
