WhatsApp Limiting Forward Messages to Combat Misinformation

WhatsApp is planning to restrict the forward messages feature in a bid to combat misinformation and spam on the messaging platform. According to the details, WhatsApp will only allow users to forward messages to a single group on its new beta version for Android and iOS.

According to WABetaInfo, a service that tracks the encrypted messenger for new features, states that WhatsApp users will be able to only forward messages to one group and they will be presented with a warning if they try to forward it multiple times.

The feature is already available in the WhatsApp for iOS beta version 22.7.0.76 and WhatsApp for Android beta version 2.22.7.2. However, this feature is only available to some beta testers and will be rolled out to more users in the coming weeks. The company is reportedly making this change to combat misinformation and spam on the platform.

It is pertinent to mention that WhatsApp had already launched a feature that allows them to detect forward messages on the platform. The encrypted messenger shows “forwarded” over the chat if the message has been forwarded once, while the words “forwarded multiple times” shows up over the chat if the message has been forwarded many times.

Furthermore, WhatsApp has also started rolling out the feature of group polls on the iOS beta version of their app. The feature allows users to create a poll in group chats and add up to 12 possible options as answers. However, the new feature is still in testing and it will take some time before it rolls out globally.
