YouTube is adding several new features to its Shorts to provide more creative options to creators. The Google-owned video platform is expanding YouTube Shorts to the Web (desktop and mobile browsers) as well as Tablets. Furthermore, the Shorts tab will now appear across devices over the next few weeks and allow users to scroll through videos vertically.
Moreover, YouTube is also allowing creators of YouTube Shorts to remix video clips from eligible YouTube videos in new Shorts. Earlier, the video streaming platform only allowed creators to sample audio from other YouTube videos on the platform.
YouTube Shorts player will now be available to users on more devices, including desktop and mobile browsers as well as tablets. Through the added options, users will see a Shorts shelf on the Home page and a Shorts tab, which will allow them to vertically scroll through Shorts.
In addition to the inclusion of YouTube Shorts on Desktop and Tablets, the video streaming giant has also allowed users to remix 1-5 second video segments from eligible YouTube videos and Shorts in the creation of new original Shorts content. In order to use the new remix feature, the user can tap on the ‘Create’ button, then select ‘Cut’ from the remix options, while a user will need to click the three-dot menu on Shorts section and select ‘Cut’ to choose the desired segment.
It bears mentioning that Shorts created from a user’s own channel content will be linked to the original video in the Shorts Player. YouTube says that linking videos in this way will allow for new audiences to discover and engage with older content in a new way.
The YouTube remixing feature will start rolling out to iOS users in the coming weeks and it is expected to arrive on Android later this year. YouTube has been focusing more and more on its Shorts platform in order to compete with Snapchat’s Spotlight, Facebook and Instagram’s Reels, and the platform which started the trend of short-videos, TikTok.
