Google is ending use of third-party call recording apps on Android from next month. According to the details, Google is going to remove all call recording apps from the Google Play Store starting May 11 as the company makes changes to its Play Store Policy. This particular policy change will prevent third-party apps from using Accessibility API for recording the call audio system. It means that apps won’t work even if they are installed manually by the user.
“The Accessibility API is not designed and cannot be requested for remote call audio recording.” said Google as it clarified the policy in a developer webinar streamed live on the internet. It bears mentioning that Google has been slowly getting rid of APRIs that enable call recording over several Android versions.
The reason behind the move is to improve privacy and security as well as different call recording laws across the globe. In Android 10, Google has already blocked call recording by default. However, the call recording apps started using the Accessibility API to record calls and get around the restriction.
Google is finally putting an end to call recording on Android with the changes being implemented next month (11th May 2022), when the company removes all call recording apps from the Google Play Store. However, the system pre-installed apps that already have permission to use the Accessibility API won’t be affected by the change.
Phones like Pixel, Xiaomi, and Realme have built-in call recording in their pre-installed dialers, which will continue to work after the policy change takes place. However, Google may remove call recording completely from Android in the near future, but the company has not announced any such plans yet.
