Meta-owned WhatsApp has introduced some much welcomed changes to the encrypted messaging platform in its recent updates, including the addition of message reactions, extending file sharing limit to 2GB, and the ability to add up to 512 people in the group chat.
WhatsApp users can now share files up to 2GB in size, which is a massive improvement from the previous limit of 100MB. Furthermore, WhatsApp says that files shared over the messaging platform are end-to-end encrypted. The company also suggests using a Wi-Fi connection for particularly large files, though the uploads and downloads of such files will show a counter that will inform the user of the progress.
The company has also doubled the size of groups, which can now hold up to 512 members compared to the previous limit of 256 people. WhatsApp is heading in the right direction to compete with the likes of Telegram, which is still ahead with the ability to add up to 100,000 people into a “supergroup.”
It is pertinent to mention that WhatsApp has also rolled out Emoji Reactions for messages on the platform, which is similar to other platforms like Telegram and iMessage. The feature allows users to quickly react to a message with one of the available six emojis, including like, love, laugh, surprise, sad, and thanks. However, the WhatsApp is expected to add more emojis to message reactions in the future.
