Sindh to Experience Six-Day Long Heatwave

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has predicted a severe heatwave over central and upper Sindh areas from Thursday (today) till May 16-17. According to the details, the daytime temperatures are expected to rise to 38 to 40 degrees Celsius in Karachi as a result of the Heatwave in the city on May 13-14.

“Daytime maximum temperature would rise to 46-48°C in Dadu, Sukkur, Larkana, Jacobabad, Shaheed Benazirabad, Naushahro Feroze, Khairpur, Shikarpur and Ghotki districts,” the advisory added. Meanwhile, the daytime temperatures in Jamshoro, Hyderabad, Badin, Thatta, Mirpurkhas and Umerkot districts are likely to remain between 43 and 45 degrees Celsius.

“Very hot and dry conditions may cause stress on crops, vegetables and orchards and increase energy demand. Farmers are advised to manage their crops,” the statement said. It is pertinent to mention that PMD, on Wednesday, recorded the maximum temperatures in Jacobabad and Dadu (46.5°C), followed by Mohenjo-Daro and Rohri (46°C), Mithi and Larkana (45.5°C), Padidan (45°C), Sukkur and Shaheed Benazirabad (44.5°C), Chhor (44°C), Hyderabad (43°C) and Badin (41.2°C).

The PMD has also directed all departments concerned, including hospitals and public welfare organizations, to remain prepared for any emergency situation. Furthermore, the authority has directed electricity and water distribution utilities to ensure uninterrupted supplies especially to heatstroke centers, healthcare facilities and prisons.
