YouTube Shorts is getting a new Green Screen feature that lets creators remix their Shorts by adding clips from other videos. The update allows creators to use up to a 60-second video segment from any eligible YouTube video or YouTube Shorts as the background for their new original Shorts video.
The feature is currently being rolled out for iOS users only and is confirmed to expand to Android platform in the coming months. However, the company has provided an exact date for the release of the Green Screen feature for YouTube Shorts on Android.
Google announced the launch of the new Green Screen feature on YouTube Shorts via their blog post. The new feature helps users to remix 60-second video segments from eligible long-form YouTube videos as well as Shorts while creating new original Shorts content.
Users can access the Green Screen feature on YouTube Shorts by tapping on the Create Button under the video you are watching. Meanwhile, they can also click on the three-dot menu on a Short and select Green Screen to choose the desired video portion.
The Short created with Green Screen will be attributed back to the original video with a link in the Shorts player. Meanwhile, the creators who don’t want their long-form content being remixed by others on Shorts can opt out of the feature. Furthermore, Google has confirmed that videos with visual claims are not eligible for Green Screen.
Google introduced the YouTube Shorts in September 2020 to rival widely popular short-video platform TikTok. Since the launch of YouTube Shorts, the company has added several TikTok-like features to compete in the short-video segment.
