MELBOURNE: Former Pakistani cricket star Wasim Akram, Sunday confirmed media reports that he was remarrying an Australian born Shaniera Thompson four years after the death of his first wife Huma.
According to sources, Akram, 47, had proposed Ms. Thompson, 30, in Manchester during Champions Trophy 2013. The couple had first met in Melbourne in 2011. Earlier, an Australian daily, Herald Sun, claimed that the “Sultan of Swing” (The King of the Swing), had proposed Ms Thompson on bended knees in a lounge room. She said Akram was nervous about proposing in the traditional way.
The Herald Sun further reported that Ms. Thompson has converted to Islam and will call Pakistan home. The daily quoted, Ms. Thompson as saying that Wasim asked me what my dream proposal would be and she said she was not the type of woman who likes a big scene.
The Australian daily added that Wasim Akram telephoned Ms. Thompson father, who gave his blessing to the couple. According to sources, former cricket legend’s children were happy for their father. It is pertinent to note here that Akram’s first wife, Huma died in 2009 and they had two children, now aged 15 and 12. The pair met in Melbourne in 2011 — something that Akram said he was happy about.
“I never thought that I would marry again, but I am lucky and very happy to find love once again,” he said.
“It just goes to show that life can give you a second chance.”
