Social media has been abuzz with rumors of Pak Suzuki Motor Company (PSMC) launching Suzuki Mehran 2022 Limited Edition and the news was welcomed by many because of the massive increase in car prices during recent months. Launched in 1989, Suzuki Mehran became the most popular car in Pakistan having sold more units than any other vehicle in the country despite the lack of safety features. However, the vehicle was popular for one reason, its good resale and availability of cheap parts across the country.
Furthermore, the vehicle remained the same throughout its lifespan of 30 years apart from a few cosmetic changes. However, the company did introduce an upgrade to an EFI engine with Euro-II certification in 2013 and the vehicle sold over 118,000 cars during FY2013-14, which accounted for 25% market share.
Suzuki Mehran was the most affordable option for many people on a limited budget and dominated car sales throughout its 30 years of sales. However, despite the extreme popularity of the vehicle, the company has no plans to bring back Suzuki Mehran in Pakistan.
PSMC announced to discontinue Suzuki Mehran in 2019 and the vehicle was replaced with 660cc Alto, which was not too expensive at the time of launch in the country. However, the same vehicle now costs around Rs. 1.5 million for the base variant with the top-of-the-line model going over Rs. 2 million.
Recently, it has also been rumored that Pak Suzuki Motor Company (PSMC) plans to discontinue the Suzuki Cultus to focus more on the newly launched Suzuki Swift and its best-seller Suzuki Alto. However, there is no confirmation about the decision from the company and it seems highly unlikely since the vehicle, which was launched in 2017 is among the best-sellers of the company.
