Heavy Monsoon Rain in Karachi Leaves City Flooded With Several Dead

At least 14 people have died due to rain related incidents in Karachi as heavy monsoon rain wreaked havoc in the port city. Meanwhile, the heavy rain in Karachi has caused flooded on almost all major roads blocking traffic and causing inconvenience to the people across the city.

The most rain was recorded in Gulshan-e-Hadeed neighborhood of Karachi, which received 102.7mm of rain during the last 24 hours. Meanwhile, other high rainfall areas included Old Airport area with 53mm of rain, PAF Faisal Base with 46mm, Jinnah terminal with 38.8mm, the Karachi University Road with 28.4mm, Quaidabad with 25.5mm, Nazimabad with 20.4mm and Gadap Town with 15mm in the same period.

There have been several rain-related causalities across different parts of Karachi. According to the details, at least 10 people were electrocuted to death, while two people died after roof and walls of their homes collapsed. Furthermore, the body of a man who had drowned in the Gadap river was also recovered by rescuers.

Intermittent rains in Karachi have also exposed the city’s drainage system and the provincial government’s claims regarding its rain emergency plans. The heavy monsoon rain in Karachi has flooded almost all major roads across the city and caused great difficulties to the people as it leaves hundreds of commuters stranded.

Several areas across the metropolis have completely been flooded and blocked for traffic movement, including Mosamiyat, Munawar Chowrangi, Jauhar Chowrangi, Jauhar Morr, newly constructed University Road, and Shaheed-e-Millat Road.

New MA Jinnah Road and Jehangir Road, where the ruling PPP’s and the Jamaat-e-Islami’s headquarters are situated, were also completely submerged by rainwater, while Shahrah-e-Faisal at Drigh Road was flooded with rainwater and inaccessible for traffic movement along with Rashid Minhas Road, Lalu Khait towards Hassan Square, University Road at Safari Park, Nipa and Hassan Square, which were also submerged and traffic was stuck.

The Korangi causeway was also closed for traffic after the Korangi River flooded, which left commuters stuck in traffic at Jam Sadiq Flyover to reach any other part of the city. Meanwhile, Qayyumabad Chowrangi, Expressway, and M-9 were also flooded and affected traffic movement.

People going to cattle markets or making their way back home were also affected by the flooded at Super Highway. However, the authorities are working to drain flood water at different areas in Karachi with the city’s commissioners monitoring the situation.

Meanwhile, Karachi Administrator Barrister Murtaza Wahab said that drainage is underway in the low-lying areas and pumps were installed for the purpose in Metropole, in Shireen Jinnah Colony, in Kharadar, at the Shaheen Complex, at the PIDC and in other areas.

He reviewed the rain-related situation in the Lea Market, Kharadar and Chakiwara areas, and directed expediting drainage in the Empress Market, Numaish, Gurumandir and adjacent areas. He said that drainage work at the Gujjar Nullah and at other small drains is in progress, while garbage is being continuously removed from drains.

It is pertinent to mention that Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast more rain in Karachi during Eid ul Azha 2022. According to the details, 400mm rain is expected in Karachi during the Eid holidays. “Heavy rainfall is expected in the outskirts of the city. The current rain system will continue till tomorrow evening or night,” said Sardar Sarfaraz. of the Met Office.
