Heavy Rain in Karachi Leads to Severe Urban Flooding

The heavy monsoon rain in Karachi has caused severe urban flooding since Sunday night, leaving several parts of the port city along with main roads like Shahrah-e-Faisal, Dr Ziauddin Ahmed Road, and II Chundrigarh Road completely submerged and inundated.

As a result of the heavy rain in Karachi, several roads in the metropolis were closed for traffic and commuters unable to get to their destinations. According to the Karachi Traffic Police, several feet of water had accumulated on Shahrah-e-Faisal at different points, while Dalmia Road is closed for traffic after it was flooded earlier today.

Meanwhile, Baloch Colony Bridge and Karsaz Road were also closed for commuters by the police. Furthermore, the Police Officials said the traffic at Sher Shah Paracha Chowk has been affected due to the accumulation of water, while the flow of the water at Korangi Causeway Road has increased after overnight showers.

Essa Nagri, NIPA Chowrangi, and Johar Chowrangi were closed for traffic as these roads were submerged under water after heavy rainfall since yesterday. Moreover, Highways leading out of the city were also closed for traffic as they had also been inundated as a result of the heavy showers.

How much did it rain in Karachi?

According to data released by Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the highest amount of rain was recorded in DHA Phase II at 126.6mm, PAF Faisal Base at 88mm. , Masroor Base at 53mm, Old Airport at 35.6mm, and University Road at 334mm.

More Rain Expected in Karachi

The Met Office has predicted more rain in Karachi with next system likely to enter the metropolis form July 14 to 18. “During this second system, heavy rains expected.” said Chief Meteorologist Sardar Sarfaraz.
