The Cupertino-based tech giant, Apple, is reportedly planning on showing more ads on iPhones to boost the company’s ad revenue in the coming months. Apple already shows a number of ads on the iPhones in apps like Apple News and Stocks but the company is planning to add more apps to the list.
According to a report by Mark Gurman at Bloomberg, the App Store and Apple Maps will likely start getting ads too in order to boost the company’s revenue from advertising. He added that we might also see expansion of ads into Apple TV Plus and ads have already started to appear in the platform’s Friday’s nigh baseball coverage.
The reason behind this move is simple as Apple wants to make more money from ad revenue. According to the report, Apple makes around $4 billion every year from ads that already exist on iPhones and iPads but the company plans to get that figure into the double digits.
It is pertinent to mention that Apple has long emphasized its commitment to user privacy and often highlighted the difference between itself and Google in terms of data collection and ad serving. While Google makes a big chunk of revenue from ads, Apple still relies on hardware sales.
The company has also been cracking down on app tracking on iOS and iPadOS by stopping advertisers from monitoring users across multiple apps without their explicit permission. However, the news regarding ad expansion has left many people wondering about the company’s stance towards privacy.
It bears mentioning that Ads we see on iPhone and other Apple products are every different from the ones on Google as they are more like paid sponsorships than interest-based ads. In simple words, a local restaurant may pay to get a higher ranking in Apple Maps.
