The Punjab Excise, Taxation and Narcotics Control Department has temporarily suspended the biometric verification for registration and transfer of all types of vehicles for three months. According to the details, the decision has been taken due to problems arising after shifting from the old manual registration system, which was causing delays in registrations of older vehicles.
After the launch of the biometric verification system in Punjab for the registration and transfer of vehicles and motorcycles, the old manual registration was completely replaced in April 2022. However, the shift apparently caused a huge loss of millions of rupees on a daily basis to the Punjab Excise, Taxation and Narcotics Control Department.
The biometric verification system was facing problems in the registration and transfer of older vehicles as their records were not completely digitized, which caused delays and loss of millions to the department. Therefore, the Punjab Excise, Taxation and Narcotics Control Department has suspended the biometric verification for registration and transfer of vehicles and motorcycles for three months.
The biometric system will remain suspended for 90 days from September 10 and the department is expected to make up for the losses during this time with a revenue of Rs. 15 billion through the registration of as many as 177,000 vehicles, which had been delayed earlier as a result of the automated system.
The biometric verification system for the registration and transfer of vehicles will be reintroduced after three months from January 2023 in a phased manner, with full implementation planned by June 2023. During this time, the Punjab Excise, Taxation and Narcotics Control Department will continue its operations with manual registration and transfer of vehicles and motorcycles.
