The draft for the next edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL 8 2023) has finally concluded in Karachi and squads for squads for the tournament have been finalized. According to the details, there have been a lot of shuffling for some players, including Babar Azam, who will now captain Peshawar Zalmi in the tournament as he moves on from Karachi Kings.
There are several international players, who are going to be making their debut in the upcoming HBL PSL 8, including Sri Lanka’s 2022 Asia Cup winning duo of Wanindu Hasaranga and Bhanuka Rajapaksa, England and Australia’s ICC T20 Men’s World Cup winners Adil Rashid and Matthew Wade, New Zealand all-rounder Jimmy Neesham and Tabraiz Shamsi of South Africa will make their HBL PSL 8 debuts in the eighth edition of the tournament, which will be held across four cities from 13 February 2023 to 19 March 2023.
Hasaranga was picked up by 2019 champions Quetta Gladiators, 2017 winners Peshawar Zalmi scooped Rajapaksa, while Wade was chosen by 2020 champions Karachi Kings in the HBL PSL Player Draft 2023, which was held here on Thursday.
The trio were picked in the Platinum Category.
Neesham, who was part of New Zealand’s squad for the 2021 and 2022 T20 World Cups, became a Zalmi after impressing the franchise following his 2,934 runs in 217 T20 matches at a strike-rate of 142 and 688 runs in 60 T20Is at a strike-rate of 159.6.
Multan Sultans lost Imran Tahir to Karachi Kings but roped in Adil Rashid, who has taken 93 wickets in 92 T20Is with an economy-rate of 7.42, while he has taken 255 wickets in 233 T20s at an economy-rate of 7.43.
Shamsi was picked by Karachi Kings. The left-arm wrist-spin bowler has played 59 T20Is in which he has taken 73, while he has bagged 225 wickets in 192 T20s. The three players were picked in Supplementary round.
The draft also saw three teenagers, who excelled at the Pakistan Junior League, picked by three different franchises. Mardan Warriors’ Aimal Khan was selected by Quetta Gladiators, Arafat Minhas of Gwadar Sharks was picked by Multan Sultans and Shawaiz Irfan of Bahawalpur Royals was selected by Lahore Qalandars.
The 36 foreign players picked up in the draft were from 10 T20I playing countries, including Afghanistan (five), Australia (three), England (10), Ireland (two), Namibia (one), New Zealand (four), South Africa (four), Sri Lanka (two), West Indies (four) and Zimbabwe (one).
