Highly controversial film, Joyland, has just been nominated for the 95th Academy Awards, becoming the first Pakistani film to be shortlisted for the Oscars.
Directed by Saim Sadiq, Joyland, has been shortlisted in the Oscar’s International Feature Film category.
Earlier this year, Joyland made waves internationally after it won an award (Jury Prize) at the Cannes Film Festival in the ‘Uncertain Regard’ category as well as the ‘Queer Palm’ award.
The film was able to bag these awards over 13 other nominations and also received a 10-minute long standing ovation from the festival attendees after the premier.
Moreover, Joyland also won the ‘Best Film From The Subcontinent’ award at the 13th Indian Film Festival of Melbourne held in Australia last month.
Joyland stars Alina Khan, Ali Junejo, Rasti Farooq, Sarwat Gilani, Salman Peerzada, and Sania Saeed.
The film has been the center of controversy as many think that it promotes LGBT culture and demanded for it to be banned in the country.
However, the decision to ban the movie was later overturned after severe backlash from some people, especially in the entertainment business.
