The Meta-owned WhatsApp is reportedly planning on adding a self-destruct feature to groups, which the company is labeling as ‘Expiring Groups’. The upcoming feature does what it says and expires or dissolves a group on a pre-determined date.
WABetaInfo, a WhatsApp feature tracker, spotted the Expiring Groups feature in a TestFlight app for WhatsApp for iOS version 2.23.5.71 and also shared some screenshots in order to show the available options under the new feature.
According to the screenshot, the user can now have groups self-destruct (aka Expire) in one day, a week, or on a custom expiration date. Meanwhile, WhatsApp has also added an option to remove the predetermined expiration date in case a user changes their mind.
The Expiring Groups feature on WhatsApp will be useful in a lot of scenarios like event planning or group traveling, which is going to allow the conversation to be deleted automatically after serving its purpose and reaching the predetermined date.
However, the self-destructing groups feature is still under development and may take some time for a global release, if that ever happens since WhatsApp is known to kill off some features during their testing phase.
