The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has increased the base power tariff for the ongoing financial year 2023-24 in response to the disbursement of the $1.2 billion loan by the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
According to details, the Government has raised the base electricity tariff by Rs. 4.96, which is going to put a massive burden on the masses amid record high inflation in the country. Furthermore, this increases electricity price from Rs. 24.82 per unit to Rs. 29.78 per unit.
However, the Federal Cabinet will decide whether the hike in power tariff will be implemented in phases or not. Last year, the Government hiked the base power tariff by Rs. 7.91 per unit for the fiscal year 2022-23 in three phases.
In related news, the NEPRA has also notified an increase of Rs. 1.44 per unit in the power tariff for K-Electric (KE) consumers on monthly fuel adjustment charges.
