Meta-owned WhatsApp is reportedly planning to bring animated avatars for video calls, a feature that has been rumored to be in the works since June of last year and resembles Apple’s Memoji.
According to WABetaInfo, WhatsApp has rolled out the ability to make video calls using animated avatars in the latest beta version of WhatsApp for Android 2.23.19.14. The messaging app is notifying users of the new feature through a pop-up banner that says “Using your avatar on calls” and an option to “Switch to avatar” or select “Not now”.
If you want to use the new video call avatar, you need to select the “Switch to avatar” option, which will mimic your facial movements and expressions in real-time through the use of your avatar character.
You can turn off this feature anytime from the settings to show your true self. Furthermore, the use of Avatars for WhatsApp video calls will not disable end-to-end encryption, ensuring safety and privacy are not compromised.
However, WhatsApp will use some data to further improve the Avatar experience on the app.
Moreover, WhatsApp has been found working on avatar for Status updates as well. However, there is no information on the feature yet.
Recently, WhatsApp rolled out a channels feature that allows you to receive updates from people or brands you follow within the application itself.
