Google has officially launched the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro after months of leaks and teasers with some major additions being the new Tensor G3 chipset manufactured on Samsung’s 4nm process and 7 years of Android updates.
The new Pixel smartphones are powered by the company’s new Tensor G3 chipset, which is manufactured on Samsung’s 4nm process. The 9-core processor packs Google’s Titan M2 security chip and enables Google AI with features like translation in real time and call screening.
In terms of memory, the Google Pixel 8 still offers 8GB of RAM, while the Pixel 8 Pro comes with 12GB of RAM. Meanwhile, both smartphones are IP98 water and dust-resistant with a fingerprint and face unlock.
The Google Pixel 8 Pro comes with a 6.7-inch 1344x2992px LTPO 120Hz OLED panel that has a peak brightness of 2,400 nits. On the other side, the Pixel 8 comes with a 6.2-inches OLED display at 1080x2400px, 120Hz refresh rate, and 1400 nits of peak brightness.
There are three cameras on the back of the Pixel 8 Pro – a 50MP Octa PD (phase-detect autofocus) wide shooter with OIS, a new 48MP Quad-PD ultrawide, and a 48MP Quad-PD 5x zoom camera with 30X Super-Res digital zoom.
The Pixel 8 offers a 50MP wide shooter and a 12MP ultrawide camera only. On the front, the Pixel 8 Pro is equipped with 10.5MP unit with a wide field of view, while the simple Pixel 8 comes with the same camera.
There’s also a new skin temperature sensor next to the cameras of the Pixel 8 Pro. The sensor is reportedly a Melexis MLX90632 unit and its sole purpose is to read temperature of an object like a frying pan.
Finally, the Google Pixel 8 Pro comes with a 5050 mAh battery with 30W wired charging and 23W wireless charging, while the Pixel 8 is equipped with 4575 mAh battery with 27W wired charging 18W wireless charging.
It bears mentioning that both phones come with free VPN by Google One and a promise of 7 years of OS and security updates, which the longest ever in an Android phone. Compared to Apple, iOS 17 was only available to devices up to 5 years old.
The 128GB Google Pixel 8 starts at $700, while 128GB Google Pixel 8 Pro is $1,000. You’ll also get a pair of Pixel Buds Pro with Pixel 8 and a Pixel Watch 2 with Pixel 8 Pro. However, the freebies are only available in the US and Europe.
