Pakistan’s mobile phone manufacturing industry has seen a significant improvement with 10.87 million handsets produces during the first eight months of 2023 (January to August), while only 0.84 million units were commercially imported.
According to Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), the 10.87 million locally manufactured or assembled mobile phones accounted for 7.62 million 2G devices and 3.04 million 3G/4G devices.
It means that majority of the people in Pakistan are still using 2G feature phones.
Pakistan’s mobile phone manufacturing industry has faced severe challenged in recent months due to the country’s economic situation, depreciation of the Pakistani Rupee (PKR), high production costs, and difficulty importing parts and resources.
These challenges resulted in increased imports compared to the previous year. However, the situation is likely to get better as Pakistani Rupee continues recovery and lifting of import restriction for parts.
