The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Thursday announced that general elections in the country will be held on February 11, 2024.
The announcement was made as ECP’s lawyer appeared before the Supreme Court during the hearing of petitions calling for timely polls across the country. “Elections in the country will be held after completion of delimitation on November 30,” the ECP lawyer Sajeel Swati told the three-member bench.
The three-member bench consists of Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa, Justice Athar Minallah and Justice Amin-Ud-Din Khan.
Sajeel added that all arrangements, including the delimitations will be completed by January 29 and the general elections will be held on February 11, which falls on Sunday, in order to ensure maximum participation of voters.
Furthermore, Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faiz Isa asked the Chief Election Commissioner to consult with President Arif Alvi and get back to the court. The CJP added that once the date is announced, the Supreme Court will consider that it is written in stone.
“The Supreme Court will not allow for the date to be changed again,” the CJP told ECP’s lawyer and adjourned the hearing till 2 pm. Once the hearing resumed, the ECP’s lawyer informed the bench that it will consult the president as soon as possible.
CJP Isa directed the attorney general to make arrangements for the ECP’s meeting with the president. “The court expects that ECP and the president agree on a date and inform the court.” he added.
