The caretaker IT and Telecommunication Minister, Dr Umar Saif, on Tuesday announced that the Government was ready to launch the “Smartphone for All” program, a mobile phone installment plan, that aims to bridge the digital divide and promote economic growth.
Under the ‘Smartphone for All’ program, the cellular companies, investment companies, and banks have been directed to provide mobile phones on easy installments to customers in order to make technology available to everyone.
Dr Umar Saif also emphasized the importance of addressing issues related to non-payment of monthly smartphone installment by defaulters. He said that a comprehensive action plan is being formulated, which may include blocking of the phones of defaulters in case of non-payment of dues.
Furthermore, the SIM cards may also be blocked and in Extreme Cases, the National Identity Cards (CNIC) may be suspended.

However, the minister did not share any details of the mobile phone installment plan yet. He did confirm that the Government was “inching closer to installment-based smartphones for Pakistan,”
