The Ministry of Inter-Provincial Coordination made an official announcement on Sunday regarding the appointment of Shah Khawar, former attorney general, as the Chief Election Commissioner of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).
Shah Khawar is set to take on this role for a duration of three months, tasked with overseeing the organization of PCB elections scheduled for February. His responsibilities will include supervising elections for the Regions and PCB chairman, as outlined in the notification issued by the IPC Ministry.
The notification stated, “Shah Khawar Board of Governors will hold elections on completion. The deadline for the election of the chairman is February 4, 2024.”
Earlier this month, Zaka Ashraf was granted a three-month extension to his chairmanship of the PCB’s Management Committee, approved by the federal government. The federal cabinet approved this extension under Rule 16(j) of the Rules of Business, 1973, and Article 48 of the PCB Constitution, 2014, according to a notification from the Ministry of Inter-Provincial Coordination.
The month of November saw significant changes within the cricket board, starting on November 15 when Babar Azam resigned as the captain across all formats after discussions with Zaka Ashraf. His offer to retain the test captaincy was declined, leading to his resignation.
Following Babar Azam’s departure, new captains were swiftly announced for Test and T20I cricket, with Shan Masood and Shaheen Afridi appointed to lead the respective formats. Additional restructuring included Mohammad Hafeez taking on the role of the team’s director, Wahab Riaz becoming the chief selector, Sohail Tanvir heading the junior selection committee, and Mohammad Yousuf coaching Pakistan’s U19 team.
