Netflix is set to enrich its gaming offerings with the introduction of the “Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy — The Definitive Edition” on December 14. This complimentary game release comes as Netflix endeavors to invigorate its gradually expanding video game segment, especially amid the mounting anticipation for the next installment in the GTA series—Grand Theft Auto VI.
Comprising three games— “Grand Theft Auto III,” “Grand Theft Auto: Vice City,” and “Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas”—the “GTA Trilogy” would collectively cost $11.99 for non-Netflix users on the App Store. However, Netflix subscribers can enjoy this game collection at no additional cost on both the App Store and Google Play Store, making it a noteworthy addition to Netflix’s gaming library, which already boasts over 80 games, including popular titles like “Heads Up!,” “Cut The Rope,” and “Bloons Tower Defense 6.”
The timing of the December 14 release by Netflix seems strategic, coinciding with recent statements from Rockstar Games, the developer of the GTA franchise, indicating an imminent trailer release for the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI early next month.
While the mobile version’s performance may differ, the console version of “Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy — The Definitive Edition” surpassed commercial expectations for Take-Two Interactive, the publicly traded parent company of Rockstar Games.
Netflix’s gaming venture, initiated in late 2021, offers free mobile games to its subscribed users but has exhibited gradual growth. According to data from Apptopia, Netflix’s video games averaged 1.7 million users last year, constituting less than 1% of its 221 million subscribers.
Netflix’s co-CEO, Greg Peters, emphasized in an earnings call last month that the measured pace is intentional, likening the trajectory of the streaming platform’s gaming business to the gradual introduction of new genres. Incorporating a segment of the immensely popular GTA franchise into its gaming library could prove beneficial for Netflix, seeking to capitalize on the franchise’s widespread popularity among gamers, the same audience that propelled “Grand Theft Auto V” to become the third-best-selling video game of all time.
