The New York Film Critics Circle (NYFCC) Awards 2023 recently announced the winners, significantly boosting the Oscar prospects for Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon,” which secured Best Film. Lily Gladstone was named the Best Actress for her role in the film. Da’Vine Joy Randolph took the Best Supporting Actress prize for her standout performance in “The Holdovers.” Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” received accolades for Best Director and Cinematography, positioning Nolan as a strong contender for the Academy Awards’ Best Director category.
Charles Melton, the breakout star of “May December,” triumphed as Best Supporting Actor for his role as Joe, and the film also secured Best Screenplay for newcomer Samy Burch. Franz Rogowski emerged as the surprise winner for Best Actor for his performance in Mubi’s indie drama “Passages.”
In the animated film category, “The Boy and the Heron,” GKids’ new animated movie and Hayao Miyazaki’s first in a decade, claimed victory. A24’s “Past Lives” earned Celine Song the first film award, and Zipporah Films’ four-hour Frederick Wiseman documentary “Menus-Plaisirs – Les Troisgros” won in the non-fiction film category. Neon’s “Anatomy of a Fall” secured another international feature prize.
Notable exclusions encompass Netflix’s “Maestro” and Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie,” underscoring the diversity and competitiveness of this year’s NYFCC Awards. The recognized films and individuals now stand as frontrunners and potential contenders for the upcoming Academy Awards.
