Meta-owned WhatsApp is working to introduce a new feature called “usernames” on the messaging platform that will allow users to search for other people without needing their usernames.
As per WABetaInfo, a WhatsApp news tracking source, the forthcoming feature on Android will empower users to select unique usernames. According to WABetaInfo, “Thanks to this [username] feature, users will have the ability to engage with others using a distinct identifier, reducing the reliance on phone numbers.”
A screenshot shared by WABetaInfo from WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.23.25.19 indicates that the platform is actively working on incorporating the username feature for a future update of the app.
Upon closer inspection of the provided screenshot, the search bar within the app will provide various search options, including name, username, or number.
The introduction of WhatsApp usernames is poised to significantly enhance privacy on the messaging platform by eliminating the necessity to share one’s phone number. This feature aligns with similar functionalities available on other social media platforms such as Snapchat and Telegram.
It’s important to note that WhatsApp has not officially announced the username feature, and its full release to the stable version of the app may take some time.
