WhatsApp is currently testing a its “View Once” for voice messages, adding an extra layer of privacy for users. This feature, currently in beta testing for Android and iOS users, follows the introduction of “View Once” for photos and videos in 2021.
With this update, WhatsApp users can now send voice messages designated as “View Once,” offering enhanced privacy measures. Once the recipient listens to the voice note, it will automatically disappear, preventing any exporting, forwarding, saving, or recording of the audio.

This feature is particularly useful for sharing sensitive information over voice messages, such as reading out credit card details to a friend or planning a surprise. The “View Once” voice messages are clearly marked with a “one-time” icon, maintaining consistency with the “View Once” feature for photos and videos. Importantly, these voice messages can only be played once.
As part of WhatsApp’s commitment to user privacy, all personal messages, including voice messages, are protected with end-to-end encryption by default. The introduction of “View Once” for voice messages is a testament to WhatsApp’s ongoing efforts to innovate and prioritize user privacy.
The global rollout of “View Once” voice messages is set to take place over the coming days, providing users worldwide with an additional tool to control the privacy of their communications. Here’s how you can sent a view-once voice message:
- Open a chat and tap the microphone icon.
- Swipe up to lock and hold to record.
- When the button turns green, it’s in “View Once” mode.
- Tap send and get notified when it’s seen with an opened receipt.
