Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) has taken a significant step in response to the ongoing gas crisis, deciding to suspend gas supply to Combined Natural Gas (CNG) stations, affecting regions across Peshawar.
A spokesperson for SNGPL stated that the decision to halt gas supply to CNG stations is a necessary measure amid the current gas shortage. This move is anticipated to remain in effect starting tomorrow, impacting CNG stations in various regions of Peshawar.
The gas crisis is not confined to Peshawar alone, as different parts of Punjab, including Lahore, are grappling with shortages in both electricity and gas supply. Urban cities are now experiencing up to three hours of load shedding, while rural areas face even longer durations of up to six hours due to the demand and supply imbalance. Sources suggest that the prolonged load shedding is a result of the government’s inability to reopen closed power plants.
In a parallel development, the Sui Southern Gas Company Limited (SSGC) announced a suspension of gas supply to industries in Karachi, intensifying the gas crisis in the metropolis.
According to an SSGC spokesperson, the decision to halt gas supply for the next 48 hours to industries, CNG stations, and captive power plants in Karachi is driven by the shortage and low pressure. The suspension is scheduled from December 23, 8 am, until December 25, 8 am.
As the gas crisis deepens, both SNGPL and SSGC actions are expected to have significant implications on various sectors, raising concerns about the broader impact on industries and daily life in the affected regions. The government’s efforts to address the crisis and find long-term solutions remain crucial amidst the challenging energy situation.
