Egypt – The prosecution has cleared Hosni Mubarak in a corruption case involving the presidential palaces. As a result of this, Mubarak’s lawyer states that “All we have left is a simple administrative procedure that should take no more than 48 hours. He should be freed by the end of the week.”
Mubarak, 85, had been arrested shortly after he left power in 2011. Though he still faces retrial over the killing of protesters in the January 25 revolution, Mubarak has already spent the maximum possible amount in jail without being found guilty, and so can no longer be held on that charge.
Mubarak has been held at Tora prison on the outskirts of Cairo along with his sons and senior Muslim Brotherhood members. Reports had indicated that deposed Islamist President Mohammed Morsi would be moved to Tora, but this never happened as Morsi remains in detention at an undisclosed location.
