Its been 21 hours since mobile phone services were suspended across the country shortly before the start of polling for the country’s General Elections 2024. Despite polling ending at 5:00 pm on February 8, the mobile phone services are still suspended at 4:00 am on February 9, 2024, which is also causing a delay in announcement of election results.
It is pertinent to mention that Ministry of Interior had posted on X (formerly Twitter) that mobile phone services would be stored nationwide soon; however, the post was made almost 8 hours ago and the ministry’s official account not provided any updates.
Furthermore, it has been 11 hours since conclusion of the polling process at 5:00 pm in most constituencies, yet the citizens are being deprived of cellular services and many people are completely cut off from communicating with others. While several people have dedicated aka wired internet connections at home or the office, there is a huge chunk of the population completely reliant on mobile data.
Meanwhile, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has begun announcing results for the General Elections 2024 based on the unofficial results. According to the Special Secretary of the ECP, Zafar Iqbal, the delay in the results is being caused by blockage of internet services in Pakistan.
