The UAE Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) has introduced the latest version of the Labor Accommodation System to improve the living conditions of workers in the UAE. According to the official news agency WAM, the initiative establishes a national platform where companies can register their accommodation facilities for workers to make sure they meet the standards and regulations set by the Ministry and its partners.
Companies with 50 or more employees are encouraged to utilize this platform to provide approved accommodation for their workers, in line with Ministerial Resolution No. 44 of 2022. Registration is done online through the MoHRE website, under the ‘Services’ icon.
The Ministry has observed a significant rise in compliance with labor accommodation standards, attributing it to the online system and periodic inspection campaigns. Companies failing to meet these standards face legal actions and closer scrutiny until corrective measures are taken.
Through partnerships with the private sector and awareness campaigns, the Ministry has witnessed a tenfold increase in registered private sector companies adhering to these standards by the end of 2023, compared to February 2022. This reflects growing awareness among employers about the importance of ensuring workers’ wellbeing, thereby boosting productivity.
Collaborative efforts among government entities have also played a crucial role in promoting compliance. In 2023, a total of 103 inspection campaigns were conducted in collaboration with federal and local entities to ensure companies meet health, safety, and living standards for their workers.
MoHRE has established national databases for labor accommodations in collaboration with relevant government entities, aiming to streamline efforts and enhance monitoring of working environments. The Ministry’s comprehensive system for labor accommodation standards prioritizes workers’ wellbeing, health, safety, and comfort, contributing to the competitiveness and attractiveness of the UAE’s labor market.
Legislation regarding labor accommodation outlines various requirements, including adequate facilities for water, electricity, air conditioning, lighting, washing, cooking, and eating. It also mandates providing suitable spaces for rest, beds, ventilation, sanitary facilities, and hygiene necessities, ensuring workers’ living conditions are conducive to their health and safety.
