Google is preparing to launch Android 15, which may include satellite connectivity features for text messaging, as indicated by findings in the Android 14 beta by Mishaal Rahman of Android Authority. The beta unveils a new “Satellite Messaging” page, allowing users with eligible mobile accounts to send and receive text messages via satellite, with an option to opt into the feature once available.
While the provider isn’t specified on the beta page, tapping “More” leads to a T-Mobile page, suggesting their involvement in offering this feature in Android 15. T-Mobile has previously partnered with SpaceX to enhance connectivity in dead zones using satellites, indicating Google’s potential utilization of SpaceX’s technology for Satellite Messaging.
The new feature will hopefully allow people to contact their family and friends regularly, even in case of emergencies, although there may be delays and limited coverage may occur, as stated by Google on their official page. Furthermore, weather and physical objects can create interference with the signal. Google would likely develop its “Satellite SOS” function, aided by Garmin Response, to be used for emergency calls. However, subject to the pending official confirmation, Google’s satellite-based network would be a great alternative to terrestrial cellular networks for many Android users, especially those who commonly experience poor reception. Such advancements could significantly broaden communication capabilities, enhancing user experiences across various scenarios.
