Cloudflare is announcing the retirement of its Auto Minify feature, effective August 5, 2024. Auto Minify streamlined website delivery by removing unnecessary characters from code, but Cloudflare is focusing on more efficient solutions.
Why the Change?
Auto Minify was originally designed to improve website performance by reducing file sizes. However, modern web development practices now often include minification during the build phase. Additionally, Cloudflare found that dynamically minifying HTML can sometimes slow down websites.
Cloudflare is committed to providing the best performance tools for its users. As they invest in advanced compression techniques, the need for Auto Minify has diminished.
What to Do Now
If you currently use Auto Minify, Cloudflare recommends taking steps to prepare for its retirement:
- Measure Performance: Use Cloudflare’s built-in performance tools to assess your website speed.
- Test with and Without Auto Minify: Run performance tests with Auto Minify enabled and disabled to see which is faster for your site.
- Consider Alternative Solutions: If Auto Minify benefits your site, explore other tools for reducing page size, such as Brotli compression.
Support and Resources
Auto Minify will be removed entirely on August 5th, 2024. Cloudflare provided this early notice to allow users ample time to test and adjust their websites.
