Saudi Arabia has warned Hajj pilgrims that they should prepare for very hot weather during their pilgrimage this year.
The national meteorology center forecasts that temperatures in Makkah and Medina will reach an average maximum of 44 degrees Celsius (111 degrees Fahrenheit). This is about one and a half to two degrees higher than the usual temperatures.
Hajj is one of the five essential practices in Islam. It is a required pilgrimage for all Muslims who can afford it. The Hajj lasts four days and includes several important rituals in Makkah and its surrounding areas.
Last year, more than 1.8 million Muslims took part in the Hajj.
In 2023, severe heat caused over 2,000 cases of heat stress among pilgrims. However, the true number might have been higher because not all affected people went to the hospital.
To help pilgrims cope with the heat, Saudi authorities are providing air-conditioned tents and misting systems.
Ayman Ghulam, the head of the meteorology center, stressed the need for adequate hydration. He advised pilgrims to drink plenty of water every day, especially as the temperatures rise.
With the Hajj starting on June 14, pilgrims are advised to take necessary precautions and stay hydrated in the hot weather. Saudi Arabia is dedicated to ensuring the safety and health of all pilgrims during this sacred event.
