The Power Division has dismissed rumors about ending the solar net metering policy, calling them false and baseless. The spokesperson for the Power Division emphasized that news channels should verify such information with the ministry before broadcasting it.
The Power Division clarified that no instructions have been received from the Prime Minister regarding any changes to the net metering policy.
These rumors began circulating after Energy Minister Awais Leghari mentioned that the government might revise the net metering policy. During a press conference, Federal Minister for Energy Sardar Awais Ahmad Leghari acknowledged the current issues with solar net metering.
Leghari explained that when citizens first installed solar systems, they would recover their investment in about three years. Now, however, they can recover their investment in just one to one and a half years.
The minister highlighted that the PML-N-led government had promoted solar energy since 2017, leading to 113,000 connections on net meters.
Leghari also clarified that while the government is open to reviewing the solar net metering policy if necessary, it remains committed to supporting the scheme. He added that the government will also take steps to combat power theft, aiming to reduce the financial burden on the national treasury.
