The Lahore High Court (LHC) has directed the police to seize vehicles that emit smoke in Lahore to reduce smog in the provincial capital.
The decision was made by an LHC bench during a hearing on requests from citizens asking the court to address the smog problem. Justice Shahid Karim led the hearing, which included a plea from a citizen named Haroon Farooq and others.
The court instructed traffic police to start a crackdown on vehicles that produce excessive smoke to tackle pollution. It also ordered the motorway police to take measures against burning stubble, which contributes to air pollution.
The court warned the Inspector General of Motorway Police that they could face contempt of court charges if they fail to take action.
In the same hearing, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) presented a report on heatstroke, mentioning that an awareness campaign has started. Additionally, 20 water tankers have been sent to the Cholistan desert to help with water shortages during the hot weather.
The court has adjourned further discussions on these matters until next Friday.
