In a significant policy shift, the Sindh government has decided to abolish the 60-day grace period for vehicle registration, requiring all vehicles to be registered at the point of purchase.
“From now on, all vehicles must be registered at the time of purchase,” announced Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Memon during a press conference in Karachi on Sunday. “Anyone buying an unregistered vehicle must ensure it is registered before use.”
Memon clarified that this new mandate applies universally, including for vehicles imported through any port in the province. “Even if a vehicle arrives at a port, it must be registered there. If it’s being transported to another province, it will have to be moved by a carrier. Unregistered vehicles will not be permitted to travel on roads within Sindh.”
This policy change will be implemented through an amendment to the MVO-1965 law. Previously, buyers were given 60 days to register their newly purchased vehicles.
Memon indicated that this amendment would be presented at the next cabinet meeting, with expectations of swift approval given the broad consensus among officials. The amendment will then be formalized through the assembly.
“Additionally, no locally manufactured vehicle will be allowed to leave the showroom without registration,” Memon added. To enforce compliance, the government is considering imposing a substantial penalty of Rs1 million for violations of this law.
