Sindh is preparing for its first premium number plate auction, which will be held at the Pearl Continental Hotel in Karachi on June 29. The auction will include three special categories of number plates: platinum, gold, and silver.
What are Platinum, Gold, and Silver plates?
- Platinum plates allow up to three characters and start at Rs. 2 million.
- Gold plates can have up to five characters and start at Rs. 1 million.
- Silver plates allow up to seven characters and start at Rs. 50,000.
To take part in Sindh’s premium number plate auction, participants must register beforehand. The event is expected to draw a lot of interest from car companies, which are also sponsoring the event. This means the provincial government won’t have to spend any money on the auction.
Sindh’s Transport Minister, Sharjeel Memon, mentioned that these number plates can be customized in many ways. They can be personalized with unique characters, transferred to other cars, and even passed down as inheritance. The plates will be linked to the owner’s CNIC, allowing them to be used with different vehicles.
Recently, the Sindh cabinet approved the introduction of these premium plates. In the 2021-22 financial year, the existing special number plates brought in Rs. 44 million from 71,645 plates. The new premium plates are expected to greatly increase this revenue. Memon estimated that if just 10% of drivers choose these personalized plates, it could bring in Rs. 2-3 billion each year.
The auction will also offer discounts of up to 30% for families and companies that buy in bundles. This initiative is similar to systems in Dubai and other countries and aims to boost the province’s revenue.
In addition to the auction, Memon emphasized the need to meet other tax targets and called for the creation of an online payment system to make tax collection easier. He also stressed the importance of improving the performance of excise department employees and warned that there would be consequences for those who do not meet their targets.
