Whether you’re a young adult eager to hit the road or a long-term resident finally ready to get behind the wheel, obtaining a driving licence in Dubai is straightforward. Here’s how you can achieve it.
Step 1: Check Your Eligibility
To qualify for a driving licence in Dubai, you must:
- Be a resident of Dubai.
- Be at least 17 years and 6 months old to start training. The licence will be issued when you turn 18.
- Be medically fit.
- Enroll and pass a driving institute approved by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).
- Pass all required tests.
Special Requirements for Applicants with Disabilities:
- Open a training file based on medical report recommendations.
- The driving institute, in coordination with the Drivers Affairs department, will set a number of training sessions according to the type of disability.
Step 2: Register at an RTA-Approved Driving Institute
Select from these RTA-approved driving institutes in Dubai:
- Emirates Driving Institute
- Belhasa Driving Centre
- Al Ahli Driving Centre
- Dubai Driving Centre
- Galadari Motor Driving Centre
- Drive Dubai
Step 3: Pass the Optical Test
Undergo an eye test at an RTA-authorized center. You can use contact lenses or glasses if needed. The test report will determine if your eyesight is fit for driving.
Collect the required documents, pay the fees, and if you pass the eye test, you can open your file and choose a suitable driving course. Options include flexible courses with unlimited training, fast-track courses, and training in luxury cars.
Step 4: Attend Theoretical Classes and Take the Test
After passing the eye test and opening your file, attend theoretical classes covering:
- Risk perception
- Traffic laws
- Road signage
- Safety procedures
Institutes offer mock tests to help you prepare. The theoretical test is available in multiple languages, and you must pass it before starting practical training.
Step 5: Practical Training and Tests
Once you pass the theory test, begin your practical training. A minimum of 20 hours is mandatory for new applicants. You will undergo several tests:
- RTA Parking Test: Conducted in the driving school’s RTA smart yard, assessed via smart cameras.
- Assessment Test: Conducted by the driving school examiner, replicating the RTA final road test.
- RTA Final Road Test: Conducted by an RTA official on the road, assessing your driving skills, risk awareness, and adherence to traffic rules.
Step 6: Obtain Your Licence
After completing theoretical classes, practical training, and passing all tests, you can collect your driving licence. Congratulations, you’re ready to drive in Dubai!
