PESHAWAR: According to a notification from the deputy commissioner, the district government has declared a Rs. 5 rise in the cost of roti. A 125-gram flatbread now costs Rs20, instead of the previous Rs15 for a 120-gram roti. The district-wide implementation of this price increase is instantaneous.
The Price Review Committee recommended raising prices, citing the rising cost of flour as the main driver of the hike. This decision was made based on their recommendations. Price modifications are required since, according to local naanbai, the cost of an 80kg bag of flour has increased from Rs7,000 to Rs8,900.
Despite the hike, naanbai in Peshawar are still facing financial strain. “Even with the new bread prices, we are still facing losses,” lamented one tandoor owner, reflecting the ongoing challenges within the sector.
In addition to the rise in roti prices, Peshawar recently witnessed a significant hike in live chicken prices. The cost surged to Rs440 per kilogramme, making it increasingly difficult for citizens to afford what was once a staple food item. Shopkeepers reported a drastic fall in sales, with only hotel owners continuing to purchase chicken in bulk.
This inflationary pressure continues to weigh heavily on the citizens of Peshawar, affecting their ability to afford basic food items.
