The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has officially confirmed the complete restoration of internet services across the country, following repairs to critical submarine cables. The recent disruptions were caused by faults in the SMW4 and AAE-1 cables, which have now been successfully resolved, restoring internet speed and stability nationwide.
A PTA spokesperson reported that the SMW4 (Southeast Asia–Middle East–Western Europe 4) cable, which first encountered issues in June, has undergone successful repairs. Additionally, the AAE-1 (Asia-Africa-Europe 1) cable, which faced faults in August, has been fixed, eliminating a shortfall of 1,750 Gbps. As a result, internet speeds have returned to their optimal levels, benefiting millions of users across Pakistan.
To boost connectivity and reduce reliance on limited routes, the PTA introduced the PEACE (Pakistan East Africa Connecting Europe) cable to the network earlier this year. This addition has helped address demand and enhance service stability. Moreover, PTA officials announced plans to add three new cables within the next two years—two by Transworld International and one by PTCL—to further improve internet reliability and reduce the impact of future outages.
Despite these advancements, Pakistan still faces challenges in delivering consistent 4G connectivity nationwide. Furthermore, since February 17, access to the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) has remained restricted. This year alone has seen multiple interruptions to internet access, underscoring the need for continued investment in resilient telecommunications infrastructure.
With plans to expand cable networks and enhance connectivity, PTA aims to minimize future disruptions and ensure reliable internet access across Pakistan.
