LAHORE: The Punjab government has decided to close all schools up to the higher secondary level until November 17 to protect students from hazardous smog levels. Announced on Wednesday by Senior Punjab Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb, the closures will affect Lahore, Multan, Gujranwala, and Faisalabad divisions, where the air quality index (AQI) has soared above 1,100.
In addition to school closures, the government has mandated a 50% reduction in office attendance and urged remote work for both public and private sectors. Mask mandates and fines for smog violations have been intensified, with authorities monitoring compliance through Safe City cameras. The public is advised to remain indoors and use masks outdoors.

The decision follows the alarming levels of air pollution, with Lahore’s Air Quality Index (AQI) exceeding 1,100, posing serious health risks. The closure affects several divisions, including Lahore, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, and Multan, as well as other districts such as Sheikhupura and Nankana Sahib.
The order also cites the government’s commitment to curbing the harmful environmental effects, referencing Section 6(1) of the Punjab Environmental Protection Act, 1997. In addition, the Health Advisory System for Critical Air Pollution Events (HAS-CAPEs) has been activated, further emphasizing the need for urgent action.
Educational institutions are advised to follow the shift to online learning during this period, with the government closely monitoring air quality levels and reevaluating the situation as necessary.
This move is part of broader efforts to mitigate the environmental crisis, with the government also continuing to enforce strict air quality regulations and penalties for violators.
