In a tragic incident on Tuesday, at least 14 people drowned after a bus carrying wedding guests fell into the Indus River in Gilgit-Baltistan. The accident occurred near the Telchi bridge in the Diamer district.
According to Astore Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Tariq, “14 bodies have been retrieved from the river.” He also confirmed that the bride was among two people rescued from the water.
The ill-fated bus was part of a wedding procession heading towards Punjab’s Chakwal district when it veered off the bridge and into the river. Police reported that a total of 27 people were on board, and 11 individuals are still missing.
The vehicle has since been recovered from the river, and a search operation is currently underway to find the missing passengers. Deputy Commissioner Tariq assured that efforts to locate the missing persons are ongoing.
Speaking to reporters, SSP Diamer Sher Khan commented, “Apparently, the accident was the result of the driver’s negligence.” He explained that the bus, which was speeding, hit the safety railing of the bridge before plunging into the river.
The authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident and prevent future occurrences. This heartbreaking incident has shocked the local community and highlights the need for improved road safety measures in the region.
